Halloween is almost here, and braces aren’t getting between you and the fun.
Whether you’re trick-or-treating around the neighborhood, heading to a school Halloween party, hitting up one of Alexandria’s trunk-or-treats, or showing off your costume at Alexandria Fall-O-Ween, there’s plenty to look forward to this spooky season.
And yes, that includes candy!
Halloween with braces just requires being a little more selective about what’s in your candy haul. Some treats are perfectly braces-friendly, while others are better saved for friends and family without brackets and wires to protect.
So grab your costume, get your candy bag ready, and follow along as your FIO team breaks down the best candy for braces, what to avoid, and a few of the costumes we’re excited to see this year.
Halloween With Braces: Key Takeaways
- You can still enjoy Halloween candy with braces. Choose softer, melt-in-your-mouth treats that are easier on brackets and wires.
- Skip hard, sticky, chewy, and crunchy candy. Caramel, taffy, gummies, hard candies, toffee, and candies with whole nuts are better left in the trade pile.
- Plain chocolate is generally a braces-friendly choice. Regular M&M’s can also be enjoyed carefully.
- Have clear aligners? Remove your aligners before eating, clean your teeth afterward when possible, and put your aligners back in.
- Don’t forget to brush and floss. Halloween may mean more sugar than usual, so keeping your teeth and appliances clean is especially important.
Can you eat Halloween candy with braces?
Absolutely! You don’t have to give up Halloween candy just because you’re wearing braces.
The trick is choosing candy you can eat with braces without putting unnecessary pressure on your brackets and wires. In general, softer treats that aren’t hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy are safer choices.
And remember: even braces-friendly candy still contains sugar. Enjoy your favorites, then give your teeth and braces a thorough brushing afterward.
What candy can you eat with braces?
Let’s start with the part everyone actually wants to know: What candy can you have with braces?
When you’re inspecting your Halloween haul, look for treats that are soft and easy to chew. As a general rule, if a candy is soft enough to melt easily in your mouth and doesn’t contain hard or sticky additions, it’s usually a more braces-friendly choice.
Halloween Candy Cheat Sheet for Braces
Here’s a quick guide to some popular Halloween treats.
| Candy | Braces-Friendly? | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Hershey’s Milk Chocolate | ✅ Yes | Soft and melts easily |
| Hershey’s Kisses | ✅ Yes | Soft, plain chocolate |
| Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups | ✅ Yes | Soft chocolate and filling |
| 3 Musketeers | ✅ Yes | Soft, fluffy center |
| Junior Mints | ✅ Yes | Soft chocolate with a smooth mint filling |
| Plain Chocolate Bars | ✅ Yes | Soft without nuts, caramel, or hard fillings |
| Kit Kat | ✅ Yes, carefully | Break into small pieces instead of biting into the whole bar |
| Regular M&M’s | ✅ Yes, carefully | Let them soften instead of crunching down on a handful |
| Snickers | ❌ Trade it | Contains chewy caramel and nuts |
| Twix | ❌ Trade it | Crunchy cookie and caramel |
| Taffy | ❌ Trade it | Very sticky and chewy |
| Gummy Candy | ❌ Trade it | Can stick around brackets and wires |
| Jawbreakers | ❌ Trade it | Too hard to bite safely with braces |
The easiest rule to remember:
Soft and melt-in-your-mouth is usually a better choice.
Hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy? Put it in the trade pile.
Can you eat chocolate with braces?
Yes! You can eat chocolate with braces, provided you choose the right kind.
Plain, soft chocolate is one of the better Halloween candy choices for braces. The problems usually start when chocolate contains things like nuts, sticky caramel, toffee, or crunchy pieces.
Can you eat M&M’s with braces?
Yes! Regular M&M’s can generally be enjoyed with braces. The candy shell is thin, and the chocolate inside melts quickly in your mouth.
A few tips: let them soften in your mouth rather than crunching down on a handful at once, and stick with the classic varieties.
Skip M&M’s with harder, crunchier, or chewier fillings, like Peanut, Peanut Butter Pretzel, or Caramel M&M’s, which can put more pressure on your brackets and wires.
What candy can you not eat with braces?
Now for the candy swap pile. Hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy treats can pull on brackets, bend wires, or get stuck around your braces.
Think twice before digging into:
- Caramels and taffy
- Gummy candy
- Jawbreakers and other hard candies
- Toffee
- Candy containing whole nuts
- Extra-crunchy candy bars
- Popcorn, especially unpopped kernels
A simple Halloween test: If you have to bite hard, tug at it with your teeth, or work to get it unstuck, your braces probably don’t want it either.
What about Halloween candy with clear aligners?
Clear aligners, like Angel Aligner™, give you a little more freedom around your Halloween candy haul, but there are still some rules to follow.
Take your aligners out before eating candy or other foods. Once you’re finished, clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in whenever possible.
And don’t let Halloween festivities throw your wear schedule completely off course. Your aligners still need to be worn for the amount of time prescribed by your orthodontist to keep your treatment moving forward.
In other words: aligners out, candy in, teeth clean, aligners back.

Halloween means your teeth may be exposed to more sugar than usual, so brushing and flossing thoroughly is especially important. If you’re wearing braces, take your time cleaning around your brackets and wires to remove any candy or food left behind.
If you’re wearing clear aligners, clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in whenever possible and keep your aligners clean, too.

Halloween With Braces FAQs
What is the best Halloween candy for braces?
Soft, easy-to-chew treats are generally the best candy for braces. Plain chocolate, Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, York Peppermint Patties, and other soft treats without nuts, caramel, toffee, or crunchy pieces are more braces-friendly choices.
What happens if I eat sticky candy with braces?
Sticky or chewy candy can get caught around your braces or pull on brackets and wires, potentially damaging your appliances. It’s best to avoid treats like caramel, taffy, gummies, and other particularly sticky candies while you have braces.
What should I do if I break a bracket on Halloween?
If a bracket comes loose or a wire is damaged, don’t panic. Avoid foods that could cause further damage and contact your orthodontist for guidance. If you’re one of our patients, reach out to our team and we’ll let you know what to do next.
Should I brush my teeth after eating Halloween candy?
Yes. Sugary treats can leave sugar and food particles around your teeth and braces, so keeping up with your brushing and flossing routine is especially important during Halloween. Be thorough when cleaning around your brackets and wires.
Can I eat candy with clear aligners?
Yes, but remove your clear aligners before eating candy. Clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in whenever possible, and continue wearing your aligners for the amount of time prescribed by your orthodontist.
