With interceptive orthodontics, we detect, treat and prevent issues before they progress to a severe state. The early orthodontic treatment experience Orthodontic treatment is a major milestone in your little one’s life. We do everything we can to help your child create a positive association with us, and make your visits the best part of their day. We take having fun very seriously here! With contests and games, iPads and a coffee bar, our goal is to create a relaxed yet entertaining space for your little one, with a convenient, premium experience for you. When is the best age to get braces or clear aligners? The AAO (American Association of Orthodontists) recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation at age 7. Age 7 sounds young, we know, but this doesn’t mean that orthodontic treatment will begin at this age. Dr. Lu is your highly-experienced children’s orthodontist in Alexandria, here to listen to your concerns and help you choose the right path for your child. Not every child needs early orthodontics, but those who do will benefit for a lifetime. Is early orthodontic treatment necessary? Orthodontic treatment isn’t just about ‘straightening teeth’. It’s about intercepting problematic conditions before they worsen, preventing discomfort or difficulties associated with untreated conditions, and establishing a healthy foundation for a beautiful set of permanent teeth. The goal of early treatment is to develop the jaws to allow for ideal dental development. By supporting proper growth of the jaw and correcting certain bite issues early on, we can eliminate the need for more complex, lengthy forms of treatment (such as jaw surgery) in the future. Does my little one need treatment? If any of these symptoms sound familiar, we encourage you to book a complimentary consultation with us! An early assessment of your child’s growth gives you the peace of mind that your child is thriving. What is Phase 1 treatment? Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is typically completed between the ages of 7 and 10 and is aimed to prepare the mouth for permanent teeth to emerge in a healthy alignment with a sufficient amount of space. During this phase, your child may be treated with a palatal expander appliance, or another appliance, to widen the upper jaw and create enough room for permanent teeth to grow. What is Phase 2 treatment? This phase generally begins in the early teen years, when all of the permanent teeth have erupted. What are braces made out of? Our high-quality braces are made of stainless steel material. Stainless steel braces are strong, won’t rust or corrode, and are safe to submerge in water (of course). How do clear braces work? Braces use brackets and wires that work together to apply continuous pressure on teeth, gradually guiding them into the desired position. Ceramic braces and metal braces work the same way, except ceramic braces have clear brackets and wires that blend in with the natural color of the teeth for a less noticeable appearance. Clear braces are specially designed for comfort and durability, with rounded brackets to minimize discomfort. Do ceramic braces take longer? The length of your treatment plan will depend on the severity of your condition! Treatment with ceramic braces can generally take anywhere from 10 to 18 months to complete. If your case is of minor severity and primarily focused on the aesthetics of the smile, your treatment period will be on the shorter end of the spectrum. For more complex cases with bite misalignments or a severe dental misalignment, your treatment will take a bit longer. How do self-ligating braces work? With BioQuick self-ligating braces, brackets are ‘clipped’ to the archwire, instead of being tied with elastics. This allows brackets to slide along the archwire as your teeth move into alignment. With traditional braces, brackets are tied to the wire, which means all teeth are moving together simultaneously. With self-ligating braces, teeth can move independently of each other, which minimizes friction and maximizes efficiency. Quick & convenient BioQuick self-ligating brackets are smaller and more compact, with no elastic ties. This makes for a sleeker appearance and a more comfortable tooth movement process. The clip mechanism also creates fewer spaces for food and debris to be trapped, and eliminates the need for ‘tightening’ braces, which reduces soreness. For patients who want a more advanced treatment alternative to traditional braces, BioQuick self-ligating braces are the perfect fit. When Dr. Lu creates your personalized treatment plan, it may include additional orthodontic appliances to achieve beautiful results in the shortest amount of time. What are orthodontic appliances? Orthodontic appliances are specialized tools, used before or during braces or clear aligner treatment, to tackle orthodontic problems with more accuracy and efficiency. With a variety of different types of removable orthodontic appliances and fixed appliances, each one has its own purpose. They can facilitate more efficient tooth movement, hold space in the mouth for permanent teeth to grow, and support proper growth and development of the jawbones. Palatal Expander Palatal expanders are a common appliance used in early orthodontic treatment for children whose jaw bones are still developing. These appliances serve to widen the upper jaw to create the necessary space for teeth to erupt in a healthy alignment. Palatal expanders can help prevent crowding and impaction by guiding proper development of the jaw bone. The rapid palatal expander (the most common type of palatal expander) is bonded to the upper molars on both sides of the top jaw, with a screw located in the center of the appliance. To activate the palatal expander, you’ll insert a special key to turn the center screw, which expands the device ever so slightly and widens the palate gradually over time. If your child requires a palatal expander, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about cleaning it, activating it and caring for it. Forsus™ The Forsus™ Fatigue Resistant Device treats overbites by creating a healthy alignment between the upper and lower teeth. This appliance uses springs to apply persistent pressure on the upper and lower teeth and create resistance, guiding the upper teeth backward and the lower teeth forward. Once the appliance is in place, it shouldn’t require any maintenance until it’s removed. It’s important that you keep this appliance as clean as possible. TADs Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) are temporary dental implants embedded into the bone to create an “anchor” that assists with tooth movement. These appliances are generally used when certain teeth require shifting, and others don’t. TADs enable us to treat individual teeth with greater efficiency. These anchorage devices appear as tiny metal buttons, strategically implanted into an area of the jaw bone. A small wire or elastic may be attached to the TAD to connect it with the specific tooth (or teeth) in need of treatment. Teeth Separators or Spacers Spacers, also called separators, are small rubber bands that help to create the space necessary for bands of appliances to be placed. A metal band is placed around the back molars to anchor the arch wires in place. In cases where the molars are too close together to allow these metal bands to be placed, separators may be used. Separators are temporary appliances that are only worn for about one to two weeks before active treatment begins. On your first visit, Dr. Lu will help you decide which orthodontic treatment aligns with your priorities - whether it’s convenience, faster results or a virtually-invisible look. Crowed Teeth Teeth that are overlapping are considered ‘crowded’. More often than not, crowding is the result of insufficient room in the mouth. When the jaws aren’t wide enough to fit all teeth, teeth start overlapping each other as they’re emerging. In some cases, crowded teeth can be treated with a palatal expander appliance during childhood, while the jaws are still developing. In severe cases of crowding, Dr. Lu will discuss the best treatment route with you. Spacing Issues It’s normal to have some spaces between primary teeth. However, significant gaps or spaces in children, teens or adults may result from having excess room in the jaws, congenitally missing teeth (missing certain teeth at birth), cavities or trauma, or certain childhood habits (like thumbsucking). Spacing issues are some of the most common orthodontic problems, and most cases can be treated with clear aligners or any type of braces. Underbite (Malocclusion) With an underbite, the lower jaw extends further than the upper jaw. This condition can cause facial imbalances, pain or difficulty when chewing and speaking, and can cause teeth to wear down prematurely due to not meeting evenly. Underbites are often treated with clear aligners, braces, and/or orthodontic appliances, and in more severe cases, surgical orthodontics. Overbite (Malocclusion) When the upper jaw extends further than the lower jaw, this is called an overbite. Depending on how severe the condition is, an overbite can cause jaw pain, difficulty eating and chewing, and speech issues. In some cases, the lower teeth will meet the roof of the mouth - ouch! Underbites are often treated with clear aligners, braces, and/or orthodontic appliances, and in more severe cases, surgical orthodontics. Crossbite (Malocclusion) When the upper teeth are positioned inside the lower teeth, this is called a crossbite. This may be a posterior crossbite (in the back of the mouth) or an anterior crossbite (toward the front of the mouth). Crossbites can affect individual teeth or multiple teeth in a row. This condition may result from irregular tooth eruption, late loss of baby teeth, or thumbsucking during childhood. It can also occur due to a mismatch in the size of the upper and lower jaws. Crossbites are often treated with with airway orthodontics, clear aligners, braces, and/or orthodontic appliances, or in more severe cases, surgical orthodontics. Open Bite (Malocclusion) If some of the top teeth don’t meet the bottom teeth when the mouth is closed, this is called an open bite. (With a healthy alignment, the top teeth overlap the bottom teeth slightly. ) An open bite may be the result of skeletal development problems and/or childhood habits, like thumbsucking and tongue-thrusting. It can be extremely challenging to chew food properly and pronounce certain words with an open... --- - Published: 2024-12-09 - Modified: 2024-12-17 - URL: https://firstimpressionorthodontics.com/orthodontic-treatment/retainers/ Retainers Your beautiful new smile is meant to last a lifetime. Wearing your retainer is how you ensure that! After braces or clear aligner treatment, you’ll start wearing your custom retainer to lock in your results. What does a retainer do? Your retainer plays the key role of holding your teeth in their new positions to prevent them from ‘relapsing’. When your braces are removed, or you take your clear aligners out for the last time, your teeth are susceptible to ‘orthodontic relapse’ (reverting back to their original, pre-treatment positions. ) Your new smile requires a period of retention to ensure that it stabilizes and maintains the new alignment. How long will I wear a retainer after braces or clear aligners? It’s best to wear your retainer day and night for the first six months of retention, while your teeth are most susceptible to relapsing. Then, you can switch to wearing your retainer at night only. Teeth have a natural tendency to shift throughout life, so don’t let your retainer sit collecting dust in a drawer! Wear it consistently every night to preserve your smile’s beautiful new alignment for years and decades to come. Types of retainers There are two types of retainers, removable retainers and fixed retainers. Removable retainers Removable retainers are made of transparent high-quality plastic, similar to clear aligners. We create our own clear retainers, in-house, with our advanced 3D printer! Clear retainers are custom-designed to fit your teeth snugly, and they come in sets - with one retainer for the top teeth and one for the bottom. Fixed retainers Fixed retainers, or permanent retainers, are bonded (glued) to your teeth and cannot be removed without your orthodontist. These retainers include a small metal wire, custom-designed to fit behind the teeth. They’re generally bonded to the back surface of the bottom teeth, but can also be used behind the top teeth depending on your case. Retainer Do’s and Don’ts DO Do put your retainer in your retainer case every time you remove it from your mouth. Do clean your retainer every time you brush your teeth. You can use a mild dish soap and an extra soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your retainer. Do clean your retainer case regularly. You want your clean retainer to be placed back in a clean carrying case every time. You can use a mild soap and lukewarm water to wash your retainer case daily, or at least a few times a week. Do soak your retainer in a retainer cleaning solution (like RetainerBrite) to disinfect your retainer a few times a week. Do clean your retainer before and after placing it in the mouth. Because the material used for fabrication is slightly porous, plaque tends to cling to the surfaces. Be sure to rinse the retainers thoroughly after cleaning to remove any cleanser or soap residue. DO NOT Do not expose your retainers to heat! Your retainer can melt or warp and become ineffective, so it’s important that you do not put... --- - Published: 2024-12-09 - Modified: 2025-06-16 - URL: https://firstimpressionorthodontics.com/contact-us/ Make the First Impression You decide how you reach out — text us, call us, email us, send a carrier pigeon over. The AAO advises that children receive their first orthodontic screening by age 7. Early screenings are essential for detecting problematic orthodontic conditions before they progress. Through early detection and early intervention of orthodontic problems, we can minimize the need for future treatment. Conditions that are left untreated into the adult years can require a more complex treatment, like corrective jaw surgery. Early orthodontic screenings enable us to intervene with problematic conditions at the ideal time, and take the necessary steps to establish a healthy foundation for a beautiful set of permanent teeth to grow. Will I need an orthodontic appliance? We won’t know this until Dr. Lu completes your assessment. Orthodontic appliances are used for a number of reasons, like widening the jaw to create enough space for all teeth or guiding the jaws into alignment to correct a bite condition (overbite, underbite, open bite or cross bite. ) If you or your child requires an orthodontic appliance, Dr. Lu will explain everything you need to know! Is orthodontic treatment necessary? Not every person needs orthodontic treatment, but those who do will experience a significant and permanent improvement in their quality of life. What is considered an orthodontic emergency? Orthodontic ‘emergencies’ are rare, but they can happen. Our team is here for you if you experience one! Fortunately, most braces emergencies can be resolved with orthodontic wax and/or a visit to our office. Please let us know if you experience any of the following:Lost, cracked or broken clear alignersLost or broken applianceRubber band comes off your bracesArchwire pops out of placeLoose or broken braces bracketSoreness due to poking wires or metal piecesTooth pain or sorenessIf you experience a true emergency that is not a common orthodontic emergency, we urge you to visit the emergency room immediately. Do not wait for an emergency orthodontist appointment! How to handle an orthodontic emergency If you experience one of these situations, just give us a call and we’ll schedule an emergency orthodontist appointment. We want to get you taken care of as soon as possible. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. You can call or text our office at (703) 822-0010. If you’re calling on a weekend or holiday, please leave a voicemail or send a text and one of our friendly team members will reach out to you promptly. We’ll help guide you through the issue and/or schedule an appointment. If you’re calling during the week after hours, we’ll get back to you right away the next morning! In the meantime, we have tips to make you more comfortable: Poking wires or metal pieces How to fix a poking wire on braces: If your braces wire pops out of place or you have a metal piece bothering you, grab some orthodontic wax. Orthodontic wax (also called dental wax) can be placed over the metal piece or poking wire to serve as a temporary cushion until you’re able to visit us. Try to push the wire back into the bracket. Use sterilized tweezers or a clean pencil eraser to push the wire back into the bracket. You can also try to clip the loose section of the wire off with a clean pair of nail clippers, then cover the end of the wire with ortho wax. Broken or missing clear aligners or appliance If you happen to break your clear aligners, retainers, or another appliance, please do not put the appliance back in your mouth. Misshapen appliances can damage your smile and shouldn’t be forced back into position. Put your broken appliance in a ziploc bag and bring it with you to your appointment, if possible. If you lost your clear aligners or retainers, please give us a call and we’ll schedule the earliest appointment with you to resolve the issue. We may advise you to wear your most recent set of clear aligners until you can receive new ones. We will prioritize your visit to replace your appliance before your teeth regress. Whether you’re kicking off treatment or halfway through your journey, now’s the perfect time to build strong habits that can actually speed things up. If you’re wondering how to make clear aligners (like Invisalign®) work faster — or how to get braces off fast — it all starts with your daily routine and good summer dental hygiene. Here’s how to take advantage of the season and fast-track your results, from your friends at First Impression Orthodontics: 1. Don’t forget: Wear time is everything with clear aligners! Wearing your aligners 22 hours a day is non-negotiable if you want to stay on track — or even finish early. And with fewer distractions from school and after-school routines, summer is the perfect time to build strong wear-time habits. Here’s how to make it easier: Only remove your aligners when eating or drinking (besides water) Keep your clear aligner case with you at all times (Consider getting a spare case if you’re on-the-go a lot! ) Set phone reminders if you tend to forget to put them back in Track your wear time Fun tip: If your aligners are starting to feel a little looser than when you first put them in, that’s progress! But don’t skip to the next set of trays unless we’ve told you to. Stick to your aligner schedule so we don’t risk delays or complications. Staying consistent is the #1 way to fast track Invisalign/Angel Aligner™ treatment. 2. Keep your smile (and aligners) clean A clean mouth & good summer dental care = a healthy, fast-moving smile. That goes for both braces and clear aligners! For clear aligner patients: Brush your teeth and aligners every day Rinse aligners often Soak them regularly to prevent clear aligner stains Avoid leaving them out or in hot places (like a car! ) For braces patients: Brush carefully after every meal Floss daily Use a proxy brush or water flosser to reach around brackets Good hygiene is how you speed up the braces process and make sure nothing stands in the way of your progress. 3. Keep your braces care kit with you A summer braces care kit or on-the-go pouch makes it easier to stay consistent with your routine, even during vacations, sleepovers, or pool days. What to pack: Travel toothbrush & toothpaste Floss or floss picks Clear aligners case or orthodontic wax Small mirror Extra aligners or elastics (if needed) Keeping your smile as clean as possible is the best way to speed up Invisalign/Angel Aligner clear aligners or braces treatment. So if you’re someone who loves to snack, keeping a care kit on hand is key to a fresh smile! 4. Snack smart to avoid setbacks With braces, certain summer snacks can spell trouble. Sticky, chewy, or crunchy foods can break brackets or bend wires, leading to additional appointments to fix your braces and potential treatment delays. With clear aligners, the rules are simpler... --- - Published: 2025-06-09 - Modified: 2025-07-09 - URL: https://firstimpressionorthodontics.com/blog/braces-or-veneers-2025/ Dental veneers have become a lot more popular lately! If you’re on Tiktok, Instagram, or getting your regular dose of reality tv, you’ve probably seen some of your favorite ‘influencers’ sporting new veneer smiles. Are you considering veneers for yourself? Are porcelain veneers a good alternative to orthodontics (clear aligners or braces treatment)? Your friends at First Impression Orthodontics (in Alexandria) are here to help you understand the realities of dental veneers, so you can make an educated decision on the best treatment route to help you achieve a stunning smile and become your best self in 2025. Let’s dive into clear aligners vs. braces vs. veneers! What are dental veneers? Dental veneers are the most common treatment in cosmetic dentistry. Veneers are typically made out of a tooth-colored porcelain or resin material, and they’re designed to look identical to a healthy natural tooth. Now more than ever, people are using dental veneers to conceal cosmetic imperfections, like discoloration, chips and cracks in teeth. Braces Vs. Veneers: Are veneers considered orthodontics? The main difference between clear aligners, braces and veneers (in terms of how these treatments improve the smile) is: dental veneers are cosmetic-focused, whereas clear aligners/braces are orthodontic treatments that alter the foundation or structure of your smile. Dental veneers will improve blemishes and textural issues, covering your natural teeth, to improve the appearance of the smile. Clear aligners and braces change the structure of your natural smile - from the jaw bones to the crowns of the teeth - which, in turn, improves the appearance of the smile. For this reason, veneers and orthodontic treatments have two very different jobs. Conditions that are purely cosmetic and don’t require any changes in the positions of the teeth or jaw bones can be covered with a dental veneer. Conditions that originate in the jaw position, bite, or dental alignment should be taken care of by our experienced orthodontist, Dr. Lu. Should I get veneers instead of braces or clear aligners? The best treatment option for you will depend on your specific concerns about your current smile and your goals with treatment. There are pros and cons to all treatment options (like most things in life), so it’s important that you know the facts before you make a decision. Dental veneers, braces and clear aligners are all highly effective treatment options to help people regain confidence in their smile. However, there are situations or conditions that are best treated with veneers - and conditions that require a personalized orthodontic treatment plan from First Impression Orthodontics. Situations where a dental veneer may be the best solution: You have a chipped or cracked tooth or teeth Your teeth are discolored You have irregularly shaped teeth: some teeth are smaller or have an abnormal shape Situations where clear aligners or braces may be the best solution: You have crooked or crowded teeth You have a bite misalignment: overbite, underbite, open bite, cross bite You have gapped teeth or spacing between teeth Your top and... --- - Published: 2025-05-21 - Modified: 2025-05-21 - URL: https://firstimpressionorthodontics.com/blog/eating-out-with-braces-clear-aligners/ Summer is the season for sunshine, good vibes and delicious food - especially in the DMV area! If you’re in orthodontic treatment with braces or clear aligners this summer, first of all, congratulations! ! We’re so excited for you to experience your BEST self. Now if you’re heading to the beach, spending time on the Potomac River, or dining out at a new restaurant, you may be wondering what to look for and what to avoid on the menu. We’re here to help! Here’s your ultimate guide to braces-friendly foods at local restaurants in Alexandria, and clear aligner-approved dishes. What is considered a ‘braces-friendly food’? As you know, all types of braces are glued to your teeth and are not removed until the end of your transformation — which means you have to choose your meals wisely to avoid damaging your brackets or wires. The food items that are least likely to damage your braces are considered braces-friendly foods! This may sound restrictive, but there are a lot more braces-friendly food options than you might think. Use this as a chance to branch out this summer and try some new delicious meals! Top Braces-Friendly Foods for Summer 2025 Eating out with braces in the DMV area doesn’t have to be a challenge! There are a ton of different restaurants with diverse menus, just waiting for you to dive in. Here are some of the best braces-friendly meal ideas and local restaurants to find them at! Taco Bowls You can find tex mex almost anywhere! Skip the hard shells and opt for a soft taco bowl filled with rice, beans, grilled chicken, and avocado. If Mexican food is your summer vibe (or year-round vibe), give Jacalito Grill a try! After all, can a 7 year old get braces? Have all of their permanent teeth even erupted at this age? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic exam by the age of 7 to screen for potential orthodontic problems, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll start orthodontic treatment at age 7 - or at all. Every child is different, with different needs and a unique smile growth rate! The purpose of an orthodontic evaluation with Dr. Lu and our team is simply to determine if your child needs orthodontic treatment or would benefit from treatment. Can a 7 year old get braces or Invisalign? Yes, in some cases, a 7 year old can get braces or another orthodontic treatment. Does that mean that your child will need braces at age 7? Not necessarily! It depends on what particular problems are detected during his or her evaluation. Every child develops at a different rate. Typically, the front teeth on the top and bottom dental arch are the first to be lost. These teeth are called the central incisors. Orthodontic treatment is designed to be able to work with a mixed dentition, or a growing mouth of baby teeth and permanent teeth, so braces at age 7 or 8 is possible! Why would braces at age 7 or 8 be necessary? We won’t know if braces are necessary for your child until they receive a braces evaluation (orthodontic exam) from Dr. Lu, your Alexandria children’s orthodontist! Dr. Lu is highly skilled and experienced in detecting problematic orthodontic conditions before they progress and require a more intensive treatment or a longer treatment process. Some developmental issues and dental misalignments become apparent around 5 or 6 years old, and it’s important that these conditions don’t go undetected and/or untreated. When untreated conditions progress, these can lead to: Chewing difficulties Speech impediments Jaw pain or tooth pain Facial abnormalities Mouth-breathing Poor sleep quality or sleep disorders Poor self-esteem Gum recession Before all permanent teeth erupt, we’re able to identify problematic conditions and create a personalized treatment plan to help guide your child’s teeth and jaw bones into a healthy, beautiful alignment. How early orthodontic treatment works “Braces for 7 year olds” doesn’t always mean ‘braces’. Orthodontic appliances are often used in the younger years to create sufficient room in the mouth for all permanent teeth to erupt in alignment. Palatal expanders Palatal expanders are one of the most common orthodontic appliances used for children. These appliances are designed to widen a narrow palate, or upper jaw bone, to prevent teeth from growing in crowded or misaligned and to correct the bite on posterior teeth that do not fit together properly. A number of orthodontic problems are caused by narrow jaw bones, and when the jaw bones have stabilized in the adult years, widening them or expanding them may require jaw surgery. Can your dentist even clean your teeth with braces on? Spoiler alert—YES it’s actually essential that you still visit your dentist throughout your orthodontic treatment! Here’s everything you need to know: Before you begin treatment Before you begin treatment, it’s important that you receive a professional cleaning from your dentist at least 6 months prior to your orthodontic exam. We want to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy and ready to support your new smile! Throughout your orthodontic treatment with any type of braces or clear aligners, you should visit your dentist every six months for professional cleanings. Your regular orthodontic check-ins and your regular dental cleanings are both essential for creating the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. Can you get your teeth cleaned with braces on? Yes! Your orthodontic treatment shouldn’t impact your dental health. Your regular cleanings are as important as ever. Even with braces, plaque and tartar are still building up. In fact, brackets and wires provide even more places for plaque and tartar to accumulate. Your dentist has taken care of plenty of other patients just like you who’ve undergone orthodontic treatment. Dentists are prepared for this! They have special dental tools that work around brackets to remove hardened plaque on your brackets and on your teeth, around your brackets. They know how to floss between your teeth and archwires effectively, without damaging your appliances. In some cases, we may temporarily remove your archwires if your dentist needs to reach a certain area. Teeth cleaning with braces will take a little longer than when you didn’t have braces, but it’s important that your dentist has time to clean your teeth thoroughly. Can you get X-rays with braces? Yes you can! You should have X-rays taken regularly, as advised by your dentist. Although your braces are made of metal brackets and wires, they’re safe to undergo X-rays. Routine X-rays are important for detecting tooth decay (cavities) that may not be apparent at first glance. Teeth cleaning with clear aligners Dental cleanings are a bit easier with clear aligners; simply remove your aligners for your regular cleanings, then pop them back in after. There won’t be any brackets or wires for your dentist to work around! You may have attachments or buttons with clear aligners, but these won’t be an issue to work around. Although cleaning braces will require some additional care (because food particles can get trapped between your brackets and wires), cleaning your teeth with clear aligners is no different than cleaning your teeth without clear aligners. You’ll remove your clear aligners to brush your teeth, floss your teeth and eat food, so you won’t have to make many adjustments to your oral care routine. You’ve gotten to know your orthodontist and team, but suddenly, your family is moving. Maybe you’re in a military family (thank you for your service! ) Or maybe mom or dad got a job opportunity in a new city. Whatever the reason may be for relocating, now you have to find a new orthodontist to continue your treatment. Is it possible to switch orthodontists before your braces or clear aligner treatment is complete? Here’s everything you need to know! Can I change orthodontists? The answer is yes, you can switch your orthodontist during treatment. Life happens! Families relocate. Orthodontic transfers happen all the time. Northern Virginia is a popular destination for both military families and families relocating to our beautiful local community. Our orthodontist, Dr. Lu, was raised in Northern Virginia and is a proud supporter of our military — and many of our friendly team members have military family backgrounds! At First Impression Orthodontics, we have a firsthand understanding of the unique needs of our local military families and relocated families. We’ve had the opportunity to treat many patients who transferred from another orthodontist due to a military PCS and various other reasons. Some patients have called us asking, “what if I’m moving and I already have braces? ” We help these patients transfer to our conveniently-located orthodontist office in Alexandria — where we provide modern orthodontics with advanced technologies, accept all PPO insurances (including United Concordia), offer flexible 0% interest in-house financing, and offer a special active duty military discount! How to Change Orthodontists: Step by Step Switching orthodontists mid-treatment can be done in a few steps. We’ll help you cover all of your bases, from informing your old orthodontist to preparing your new orthodontist, to ensure a smooth transfer process during treatment. 1. Inform your orthodontist. As soon as you learn about your move, be sure to inform your current orthodontist. Giving them a heads-up early allows time to gather and share your treatment records with your new provider — hopefully First Impression Orthodontics! If you paid-in-full for treatment, the financial coordinator of your current orthodontist may have to configure a plan to provide you with a refund. It’s important to allow your orthodontist enough time to prepare for your transfer. 2. Search for orthodontists in your new area. Grab your phone, laptop or computer and search for an “orthodontist near me. ” If you live in Alexandria (DMV, DC/MD/VA) or the surrounding communities of Lorton, Franconia, Kingstowne, Springfield, Newington, Mount Vernon or Fort Belvoir, come see us for a complimentary consultation with our highly-experienced doctor, Dr. Lu! While you’re searching for practices near you, check out their Google reviews to learn more about their patient experience. Are the majority of the reviews positive? First Impression Orthodontics has over 580 five-star Google reviews! 3. Pick the right orthodontist for you. Assess each practice’s website. Is it up-to-date?
